Facilitate recycling

Sainsbury's launches largest recycling system for flexible plastic packaging

Following a successful trial in the northeast of England, 520 Sainsbury's stores will now offer a recycling system for all flexible plastics.

Sainsbury's is the leading supermarket with the largest rollout of this initiative to date. The mass rollout will help dramatically reduce plastic waste pollution. Only 17% of UK local authorities collect flexible plastics for recycling!

Common household items that can now be recycled include crisp packets, grocery bags, salad bags, cookie and cake wrappers. Following a successful trial in the North East of England, Sainsbury's has introduced an innovative new recycling scheme in a total of 520 supermarkets, allowing customers to recycle all flexible plastic packaging that is not usually accepted for kerbside collection by local authorities.

The in-store recycling points make it easier than ever for customers to make more sustainable choices by offering a trusted recycling system where they can properly dispose of flexible plastic packaging. This includes packaging such as potato chips packs, grocery bags, salad bags and cookie and cake wrappers, which are currently not accepted for recycling by 83% of UK local authorities.

The expanded initiative has the potential to significantly reduce the amount of plastic packaging that ends up in landfills. A report by WRAP estimates that flexible films contributed to 290,000 tons of plastic packaging waste in 2019.

The launch of the new market-leading recycling scheme by Sainsbury's is the latest step in the retailer's initiative to reduce, reuse, replace and recycle plastics in its own operations, while making it even easier for customers to recycle.

The news follows the announcement in May that Sainsbury's had joined the Flexible Plastic Fund - an initiative designed to ensure flexible plastics are properly recycled. Although flexible plastics account for a fifth of all plastic packaging used by UK citizens, only 6% is currently collected for recycling.

Claire Hughes, director of product and innovation at Sainsbury's, said:

We are very pleased to announce the widespread rollout of the flexible plastics recycling program in over 520 of our stores. Making recycling easier for our customers is an important part of our strategy to minimize the impact of single-use plastics on the environment, as well as our own ambitious goal to reduce the use of plastics in our own operations by 50% by 2025.

Sainsbury's has become the first retailer to commit to halving its use of plastic packaging by 2025.

The company has also led the way by removing single-use plastic bags from loose products, reducing the amount of plastic in packaging for Taste the Difference and SO Organic Lamb and Steak by 70%, and eliminating over 297 tons of plastic waste by working with Prevented Ocean Plastic to repurpose plastic collected on the coast into packaging for its strawberry and fresh fish ranges.

The retailer has also been announced as a key supermarket partner for the United Nations International Climate Change Conference, COP26, taking place this November.

The labeling obligation for disposable cups is coming!

A correctly marked disposable cup. Motive: © EU, 2021

Important customer information
March 2021

Dear Customer,

the labeling obligation for disposable beverage cups - the so-called "Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD)" of the European Union - will soon come into force as a new packaging declaration obligation in order to counteract nature and water pollution.

Specifically, EU Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2151, dated December 17, 2020, requires standardized "PRODUCT CONTAINS PLASTIC" labeling for a whole range of packaging - including beverage cups - regardless of the percentage of plastic content.

This applies to all corresponding products Europe-wide from 03 July 2021.

The labeling introduced is intended to inform consumers of the presence of plastic in the product, the waste disposal routes to be avoided for this product, as well as the negative impact of this pollution on the environment or other inappropriate means of waste disposal of the product.

All you need to know

  • Cups delivered to customers before July 03, 2021, may be sold in this European member state without labeling until July 04, 2022.

  • Cups that are reshipped and sold (placed on the market) in another EU member state must have the labeling after July 03, 2021 - regardless of the delivery date.

  • The regulation applies to all types of non-reusable cups from which beverages are served, whether with or without a filling line, made of plastic or cardboard, and also applies to all so-called "plastic-free" cups. (Note from the management: There are no completely plastic-free cups without plastic content and therefore without mandatory labeling).

  • The labeling must be applied in the respective national language, but additional languages are permitted. Marking of the sub-packaging is not sufficient.

Upon request, we will add the required labeling for you already now, taking into account all specifications. Depending on our producers as the manufacturers, this may also lead to an adjustment of the layout and necessary new clichés. Below the future additional markings and colors for your knowledge:

f.l.t.r.: For hard paper cups; For plastic cups/printing; For plastic cups/embossing;

f.l.t.r.: For hard paper cups; For plastic cups/printing; For plastic cups/embossing;

To ensure that you are on the safe side legally, our technical consultants and print specialists check the relevant prints and the implementation of the legal requirements for you.

If you have any further questions about the new labeling obligation (... which, by the way, also applies to hygiene pads, wet wipes and tobacco products with filters ...), we will be happy to answer them at any time.

Nick from Nizza likes Pizza

How nice that would rhyme, but Nick Zelazny (21) comes from Heilbronn. As 'Media Designer - Digital and Print', he has already been strengthening our team for a few weeks with design and commercial tasks.

The enthusiastic hobby photographer, who also has a passion for online media / computer / IT, image processing and hifi, dedicates half of his time to each of the two aforementioned full-time jobs.

But for the time being he would rather not have his portrait taken with our camera. That's why here and in the WEBER Family Gallery the icon of a brain as a placeholder adorns "his" motif for the time being.

But maybe we can change his mind by helping him a little bit: his favorite dish is - as he tells us - "Pizza Salami" :)

No Game. Very practical.

Yannick Fleischmann (23) studies packaging technology at the Stuttgart Media University (HDM).

Like many of his fellow students, he was looking for an internship in the 5th semester - his 'practical semester' - "I was very lucky to get a place directly at my place of residence in Frauenzimmer through my friend Felix Pfisterer," he sums up.

For a total of six months - up to and including February 2020 - Yannick Fleischmann will now be joining the WEBER family with the study objective of 'Packaging Engineer' and will be able to get a taste of all the company's business areas.

Yannick Fleischmann: "My hobbies are architecture, photography and gaming. But in this case I support the WEBER team in a very practical way - in graphic design and video editing.

Recognize facial expressions and read lips

On May 20, 2020, the Kaywaldschule support association published a thank you to us on its Facebook page. This was preceded by a donation of face shields for the children, young people and teachers.

Martina Braun, deren Tochter Emelie in der Kaywaldschule zur Schule geht, nahm Kontakt zu uns auf und …

For people with a hearing impairment, life is currently even more difficult because the masks eliminate lip-reading. The face shields enable these people to continue to participate in daily life.

The face shields were therefore used with great success in the horse yard outdoor class: "Working with them was much easier for everyone than with a fabric mask," she says.

In this respect, these did not only make sense when filling the feed baskets with hay for the horses at the Nordheim Riding Club (... the outside class of the Kaywald School ...), but they would also be worn during the entire stable work, Martina Braun comments. "So also when sweeping, dunging, feeding...".

Emelie's teacher, Mrs Höhn-Mizo, also thinks the face shields are great, because "then my glasses won't tarnish and they won't slip like the stupid mouthguards", says Emilie.

The fact that the shields can be put on and taken off by the children themselves - which does not always work with normal mouthguards due to motor deficits - is a great advantage. Above all, the teachers and carers would be able to recognise the faces and facial expressions of the hearing-impaired and/or autistic children very well and also read lips.

Office dog Tass gave his okay

The fact that Jennifer Seuthe from Cleebronn in the beautiful Zabergäu region is now working with us is ultimately due to our office dog Tass, a Galgo:

During the interview, personnel manager Michael Weber told me that Tass was responsible for personnel decisions. It was good that I had some treats in my pocket and the decision was made quickly :-)

With her own dog Lemmy, an English Staffordshire Bullterrier, the 34-year-old regularly powers herself out while jogging. Or when "playing sports" together with friends inside.

As a trained media designer, she had previously worked for 11 years in neighbouring Pleidelsheim in the packaging-oriented flexographic printing industry.

Curious as we are, we ask them: ... and - how was your first day with WEBER ...!

I was given a very warm welcome in the team and feel as if I have been with them forever. The positive image already conveyed by the WEBER homepage has been confirmed in all areas so far and runs like a red thread through the entire company. We live what we communicate ... great storytelling!

There's nothing left to close:

Philipp Knödler has been working for us since the beginning of May in an office position in customer service.

Visibly trained, the 23-year-old jogger and fitness "freak" also got used to us very quickly. He says about his first days at his new job:

I immediately felt very welcome and well received. It feels like I've been here for a long time.

Besides sports, Philipp also loves travelling, photography and ... our coffee:

Alone because of the delicious coffee it was worthwhile to change here.

... he says and smiles.

“I'm sorry...!?”

Smooth business requires clear communication. That people understand each other. Be this through our language and/or the facial expressions or gestures of both persons. At the latest since the publication of Prof. Paul Watzlawick's literary bestseller we know.

You can't not communicate.

Because communication is behavior. And you understandably can't not behave. You always behave in some way. To something or someone.

Deaf people criticize mouth coverings

From deaf associations one learns in the meantime that the often quoted masks reaching over nose and mouth would make a reading of the lips and other facial expressions nearly impossible, yes a downright obstacle with the understanding would be.

This can only be confirmed by our employee responsible for corporate communications. He was last equipped for shopping at the bakery.

The bakery saleswoman looked at me questioningly. She hadn't understood me.

– Ingo H. Klett

Keeping a distance of one meter and fifty metres to the operating personnel, a plexiglass pane placed on the counter of the service counter as protection against accidental dripping and even provided with a textile nose-mouth cover, the friendly lady behind the service counter did not understand anything at all at first. If this happens umpteen times a day, it is very annoying for your staff and also for your customers.

As a former member of the rescue service Klett knows: There is no such thing as 100% safety from an infection via droplets or aerosols that have directly entered the mouth, nose or eyes. Neither with self-sewn nor with certified models for the health sector. He therefore prefers to talk about probabilities.

But if you want to equip your staff in consulting, sales and service with a 100% transparent, crystal-clear version, which also allows the interpretation of your own facial expressions, you should click on the black button right here ...

Jacob's coffee ;-)

School intern Jacob Liebl roasting coffee. Photo: © WEBER Packaging GmbH, 2020

School intern Jacob Liebl roasting coffee. Photo: © WEBER Packaging GmbH, 2020

Jacob Liebl, a 15-year-old student of the Fritz-Ulrich Community School in Heilbronn, is currently spending his one-week school internship with us. Among other things, he learned how to roast green coffee to roasted coffee on a so-called shop or shop roasting machine. The special feature: it stands on a large smoke filter which ensures clean room air.

I never knew roasting coffee was so easy

– Jacob Liebl

His class teacher was able to convince himself of the fact that Jacob is really learning something very practically during a personal visit to our house last Wednesday.

In a feedback session lasting around 30 minutes, which took place in the meeting room of WEBER Packaging GmbH, he noticed quite quickly that Jacob is in good hands and very well integrated in the team of our WEBER family - at least temporarily.

Corporate Communications

In order to write this blog post in particular, Ingo H. Klett, who is responsible for corporate communications at this innovative medium-sized company, conducted a personal interview with Jacob Liebl and explained to him various methods of editorial research and retrievable information that enhance the news value of a post.

Likewise, Jacob was shown examples of press photos such as his own (shown above) to explain the copyright of the photographer as well as the right to his own picture, the meaning of a caption in this respect or what a model release means in comparison.

Theory and practice

In the meantime the inquisitive young man knows that the term communication comes from Latin and is derived from 'communicatio' (lat. for: communication). And that it refers to the exchange or transmission of information which can take place in various ways and or by various means.

Expressed through language and writing, a defined typography as well as images intended for publication such as photos, graphics or illustrations.

Be authentic

The proverbial good reputation, namely maintaining one's 'image' as an individual, institution or company, explains Klett, can best be maintained in communication by telling third parties as exactly as possible "what someone is". And so today, a good-humoured Jacob Liebl leaves us after a successfully completed school internship, not least with the knowledge that 'image' means not least the image that you form of someone.

From Jacob we have - this still as feedback maybe - a very very good one :-)

From Monday, January 13 to Wednesday, January 15, 2020, designers and fashion brands from the high-end segment will present their collections and designs for Autumn/Winter 2020 to press representatives, buyers and fashion insiders for the first time at Kraftwerk Berlin as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. Once again, our cooperation partner for sustainability, Danny Reinke, has successfully applied.

With 15 shows and exhibitions of over 30 participating exciting talents and established brands, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin in January 2020 will once again offer a platform in a new location to a growing number of designers. Initiator Mercedes-Benz and organiser NOWADAYS are pleased to announce the official show schedule of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin for the Autumn/Winter 2020 season - as shown in the graphic below. After this, Danny Reinke's Runwayshow on Tuesday, 14 January 2019 at 13:30 (CET) will open the shows on this special day:

FASHION TALENTS

This season the show concept will be opened on the evening of January 13, 2020 with a group show by four fashion designers from South Africa presented by Mercedes-Benz, who will present their creations as part of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Talents program for the promotion of young talent. In the joint fashion show Clive Rundle, Floyd Avenue, Viviers Studio and Rich Mnisi will present the spectrum of contemporary South African fashion - which interprets culture, craftsmanship and tradition in a modern way.

Love Brands

Other participating labels on the 45-metre long RUNWAY on the upper floor of the power plant include established love brands such as Sportalm Kitzbühel, Riani and Kilian Kerner's label KXXK as well as upcoming designer labels such as Cashmere Victim, Danny Reinke, Irene Luft Couture, Lena Hoschek, Rebekka Ruétz and DSTM.

The internationally operating collective Last Heirs will show their new collection on Tuesday evening. In the run-up, the green fashion platform NEONYT will present their popular combined show with brands and designers who are committed to sustainable fashion.

A special highlight will be the closing of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin Autumn/Winter 2020, where Wolfgang Joop will present his new concept "Looks by Wolfgang Joop" in a world premiere exclusively to a professional audience.

NEW: STUDIO

The MBFW will also start directly in the new location with a second presentation platform, the newly designed STUDIO. The additional showcase enables designers to create even more individual and conceptual productions as an option to the RUNWAY.

The opening will already be impressively staged: it will take place on Tuesday evening with the show by designer duo ODE-EH. Designer Nobi Talai will then present her new collection to the invited guests on Wednesday.

Focus on fashion & design

In cooperation with creatives, partners and press representatives, the parties involved are continuing to work on their mission to represent Germany as a fashion location in an eye-catching way and to enliven its content.

The show schedule is supplemented by various fashion-focused exhibition concepts:

  • LOCAL HEROES: In cooperation with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Business / Projekt Zukunft is presenting a new concept for supporting talented and established fashion labels from Berlin. In addition to three sponsored fashion shows, 6 designers will have the opportunity during the MBFW to present their key looks to the trade and the general public within an installation.

  • MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION TALENTS: The most striking designs by the Mercedes-Benz sponsored designers Clive Rundle, Floyd Avenue, Viviers Studio and Rich Mnisi will be on display throughout the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin following the opening show and can also be experienced by end consumers.

  • A/C POP-UP GALLERY: Another special novelty within the new location is the Pop-up Gallery. Here, "A/C" stands for "Artists & Contributors", because in the future, different art and creative forms flanking fashion will be presented here. At the opening of the new space, multi-artist Armin Morbach will exhibit a curated selection of his work. The vernissage of the A/C Pop-up Gallery will take place on Tuesday, 14 January 2020 at 11.00 a.m. in the presence of the artist.

Fashion Insights – also interesting for end consumers

Consumers are invited to visit Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin free of charge, to admire the exhibited looks of designers from Berlin and South Africa, to get to know sustainable design at NEONYT, to visit the A/C Pop-up Gallery and of course to experience the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin shows live in the Public Viewing.

The shows will be streamed live online every day at www.mbfw.berlin as well as on youtube and Facebook. Behind-the-scenes impressions, fashion insights and updates are available non-stop on the Instagram Channel of MBFW: www.instagram.com/mbfw.berlin

Within the framework of this research project ...

  • the volume of disposable cups for hot drinks in Germany should, as far as possible, be differentiated according to where they are produced

  • a classification of the waste management relevance with focus on disposable cup systems

  • the evaluation of the effects on the environment and resources is carried out by means of a screening eco-balance for disposable and reusable cup systems

  • voluntary and legal measures are derived and analysed with regard to their effect on reducing the volume of disposable beverage cups

In addition, according to the Federal Office, the volume of returnable beverage cups for hot drinks in Germany would be collected and analysed as far as possible.

overarching objective

… is the derivation of recommendations for action that the Federal Environment Agency can communicate to the political level (BMU and Conference of Environment Ministers), business associations and trade, and to consumers.

Conclusion and recommendations for action

The results of the study thus confirm our previous position of only and exclusively recommending certain systems such as reusable packaging if the overall ecological balance is positive. You can read more about this in the following press release:

German Animal Welfare Association promotes vegan Christmas

17.12.2019, Bonn – Whether roast goose, lobster, salmon, cheese taclette or egg liqueur - traditional Christmas dinner is often associated with considerable animal suffering. The German Animal Welfare Association appeals to all those who want to conjure up something tasty for their loved ones at Christmas to make the feast of love the feast of animal love. Those who want to spend the holidays in an animal-friendly way can fall back on a variety of herbal recipes.

"Christmas is the feast of compassion and contemplation. But a look at the brochures and supermarket shelves shows that Christmas is a time for compassion and reflection: "When it comes to our food, there is often a double standard. With millions of animals in the agricultural industry, nothing of this compassion gets through", says Verena Jungbluth, head of veganism at the German Animal Welfare Association. "Particularly in the hectic, mostly consumption-oriented Christmas season, it is important to become aware again of what we want to support with our purchase decisions - and what not.

Disastrous housing conditions

The majority of Christmas geese come from Poland and Hungary where they often have to live in catastrophic conditions. In countries like France or Hungary, the animals are stuffed three times a day, mostly by machine, to produce foie gras. But also in Germany pigs, cattle or chickens often cannot come close to their natural needs, have hardly any space and no employment opportunities.

Salmon usually come from the crowded confines of huge fattening farms. Crustaceans, especially lobsters, often vegetate for months in narrow boxes with tied shears before they reach the retailer. After purchase, they are thrown alive into boiling water, where they undergo a death struggle lasting several minutes.

And since there is no labelling requirement for processed eggs - unlike fresh eggs - products bought in supermarkets or from bakers, such as egg liqueur or stollen pastries, still mostly contain eggs from hens kept in cages in contravention of animal welfare regulations.

Vegan delicacies and careful shopping

Both sweet and savoury dishes without any animal suffering can be prepared easily today. Christmas delicacies such as gingerbread and marzipan are often vegan anyway - it's worth taking a look at the list of ingredients.

Vegan chocolate cake, Christmas stollen or cookies can be easily prepared with the right recipes, even without eggs, butter and cream. Roasts made of lentils, nuts or chestnuts, combined with vegetable variations and salads, are suitable for the festive table.

„Es ist einfach wie nie, tierleidfrei zu essen“

… Nobody who chooses the plant-based variant has to do without a delicious, hearty Christmas feast," explains Jungbluth.
